Mumbai, 25th Jan: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has called for the withdrawal or amendment of the University Grants Commission (UGC) notification related to campus discrimination, raising concerns over inclusivity, clarity and potential misuse.
In a public statement, Chaturvedi said that any form of caste-based discrimination on campuses is wrong and that several students in India have already suffered serious consequences due to such practices. However, she questioned whether the law is being applied in an inclusive manner and whether it ensures equal protection for all.
She asked why there appears to be discrimination in the implementation of the law and raised concerns about how false cases would be handled. Chaturvedi also questioned how guilt would be determined and how discrimination would be defined — whether through words, actions or perceptions.
Stressing the need for legal clarity, she said the process of implementation must be clear, precise and uniform for everyone. She warned that vague provisions could create a negative atmosphere on campuses rather than fostering harmony and fairness.
Urging corrective action, Chaturvedi said the UGC notification should either be withdrawn or suitably amended to ensure it is balanced, inclusive and applied equally, without scope for ambiguity or misuse.
