Amritsar, 12th Jan: Punjab Police on Monday announced the arrest of two shooters and five other accused in connection with the murder of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch who was shot dead at a wedding in Amritsar on January 4.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the two main shooters — Sukhraj Singh alias Ganga, a resident of Patti in Tarn Taran district, and Karamjit Singh of Gurdaspur district — were arrested from Raipur in Chhattisgarh on Sunday in coordination with local police and central agencies.
The duo were produced before a court in Raipur and taken into custody after transit remand was granted. They are now being brought to Amritsar for further investigation, the DGP said.
The five other accused, who were part of the logistical and support network behind the crime, were arrested from different locations in Punjab.
The victim, Jharmal Singh, sarpanch of Valthoa village in Tarn Taran district, was shot dead at point-blank range while attending a wedding ceremony in Amritsar. CCTV footage from the venue showed two men entering the premises, with one of them pulling out a firearm and shooting Singh in the head before fleeing the spot.
Singh was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The incident had sparked political outrage, with opposition parties accusing the AAP government of failing to maintain law and order in Punjab. The BJP had demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the incident.
