Chennai, 18th Aug: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and actor Vijay has issued a rallying call to his party’s cadre ahead of the state conference in Madurai on August 21. He declared that the 2026 Assembly elections would be a turning point in Tamil Nadu’s political history.
In a letter to his party workers, Vijay likened the upcoming poll battle to the historic 1967 and 1977 elections, when new parties emerged victorious. He stated that TVK is set to become a formidable force capable of reshaping the state’s political landscape, promising to “write a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s history.” The Madurai conference is intended to be a major show of strength and a launchpad for his statewide tour.
Vijay’s entry into politics comes at the peak of his film career, setting him apart from other Tamil cinema icons who failed to translate their popularity into political power. Unlike MGR and Jayalalithaa, many popular stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Vijayakanth, and Kamal Haasan could not achieve electoral success. Superstar Rajinikanth also ultimately chose to opt out of politics.
On the matter of alliances, Vijay has taken a firm stance, ruling out any partnership with the ruling DMK, which he calls his “political enemy,” and the BJP, which he describes as his “ideological enemy.” This position also rules out a tie-up with the AIADMK, which has revived its relationship with the BJP. So far, TVK plans to contest alone. Vijay urged vulnerable persons, including the elderly, pregnant women, and the sick, to follow the event online for their safety.
