Washington, 2nd April: US President Donald Trump on Thursday launched a sharp attack on former President Barack Obama over the Iran nuclear deal, calling it a “disaster” and defending his decision to withdraw from the agreement.

In a national address, Trump said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015, was a mistake that allowed Iran to continue its nuclear ambitions.

“He made a mistake with Iran… I was honoured to correct it,” Trump said, without directly naming the deal initially.

He alleged that Iran “laughed” at the United States after receiving financial relief under the agreement and continued pursuing nuclear capabilities.

The JCPOA, signed between Iran and major world powers, imposed restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. However, Trump withdrew the US from the deal in 2018, arguing it failed to address Iran’s missile programme and long-term ambitions.

Reiterating his stance, Trump said he had always vowed not to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, describing the regime as a long-standing threat.

He also referred to the 2020 killing of Qasem Soleimani, calling it a major achievement during his presidency.

Trump claimed that his actions had corrected past policy mistakes and prevented what he described as a dangerous escalation in the Middle East.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with global powers closely monitoring developments related to Iran’s nuclear programme and broader geopolitical stability.
