Washington, 4th Sept: The Trump administration has taken its tariff fight to the US Supreme Court, defending the duties as essential for America’s financial strength and peace in Ukraine.

The move comes after a federal appeals court ruled that former President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by using emergency powers to impose wide-ranging tariffs. The court, however, let the duties stay until mid-October.

In its filing, the administration said tariffs against India for buying Russian oil were part of a national emergency response to Moscow’s war in Ukraine. “With tariffs, the US is a rich nation, without them, it is a poor nation,” the plea stated.

Trump has doubled tariffs on India to 50 percent — half aimed at penalising Russian oil imports and half under his “America First” drive.

He dismissed the appeals court’s ruling as “incorrect” and vowed on Truth Social to fight back “with the help of the Supreme Court.”
