Washington, 7th Jan: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “not that happy” with him over the steep tariffs imposed by Washington on India for its purchases of Russian oil.

Speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, Trump claimed that his administration’s trade measures have led India to substantially reduce its oil imports from Russia. “I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because they’re paying a lot of tariffs now because they’re not doing the oil, but they are, they’ve now reduced it very substantially from Russia,” Trump said.

Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent levy linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil.

The US President also referred to defence ties between the two countries, claiming that India has been waiting for several years for the delivery of Apache helicopters. “India ordered 68 Apaches. We’re changing it. We’re changing it,” he said, without providing further details.

The remarks come amid heightened trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington over tariffs, energy purchases and defence supplies.
