WASHINGTON – According to news media reports on Saturday the US President Donald Trump’s officials are quietly discussing a potential meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his upcoming Asia trip has sent ripples through the international community.
White House has yet to confirm the reports, the prospect of a meeting between two of the world’s most prominent leaders is undoubtedly significant.
In 2019, Trump became the first sitting US President to set foot in North Korea, meeting Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone.
The meeting was hailed as a breakthrough in diplomatic efforts, although subsequent talks faltered over disagreements on denuclearization.
According to reports, Trump’s interest in meeting Kim was rekindled after hosting South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House in August. Lee suggested that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering could provide an opportunity for the two leaders to meet.
US officials have not begun logistical planning or direct communications with Pyongyang, Trump’s personal interest in a potential sit-down with Kim appears to be a driving factor.
