Agartala, 26th Dec: Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen passed away early Friday morning at a private hospital in Bengaluru after a prolonged 139-day battle for life. He was 72.
The veteran leader and Dharmanagar MLA had been hospitalised on August 8 after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage while travelling from Agartala to his constituency. He underwent emergency surgery in Tripura and was later airlifted to Bengaluru for advanced neurological treatment. His condition deteriorated late Thursday night and he passed away around 3:30 am on Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over his demise, saying Sen would be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura’s progress and his commitment to social causes.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha described the death as an irreparable loss to the state and announced three days of state mourning till December 28. During this period, the National Flag will fly at half-mast. As a mark of respect, educational institutions and government offices remained closed on Friday.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and several other political leaders also extended condolences.
A four-time MLA, Sen was known for his long legislative experience and deep connect with people in North Tripura. His mortal remains will be flown to Agartala on Saturday and then taken to Dharmanagar, where his last rites will be performed with full state honours. Government and BJP party activities in Dharmanagar have been suspended during the mourning period.
