Washington, D.C.,15th March. Highlighting the significance of India-US security cooperation and technological collaboration, a senior American diplomat underscored the pivotal role these partnerships will play in the coming years.
Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma, echoed President Joe Biden’s sentiment, emphasizing that the India-US relationship stands as the defining partnership of the 21st century.
In a recent blog post following his return from India, Verma, the highest-ranking Indian-American in the State Department and former US Ambassador to India, outlined the remarkable growth in bilateral ties over recent decades. Identifying defense, democracy, and technology as key areas of cooperation, Verma emphasized the necessity of collective efforts in addressing global challenges.
Verma highlighted the growing importance of security cooperation, stressing the need for increased capabilities, information sharing, and maritime domain awareness to ensure regional security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. He also emphasized the significance of strengthening democratic values and institutions amidst rising authoritarianism, emphasizing the importance of a rules-based international order.
Moreover, Verma underscored the promise of collaboration in emerging technologies, acknowledging both the opportunities for economic growth and the risks posed by cyber vulnerabilities. He emphasized the need for joint efforts in tackling data privacy issues and enhancing cybersecurity protections. Through initiatives like the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership, the US is partnering closely with India to bolster internet infrastructure and cybersecurity measures.
Verma concluded by highlighting the broader scope of collaboration, spanning from semiconductor production to space exploration and clean energy innovation. He emphasized that this partnership is essential for both economic prosperity and physical security, particularly in addressing global challenges like climate change.
