Kolkata, 17th Nov. Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is on a two-day Meghalaya visit beginning Thursday, with an eye on next year’s assembly elections.
Banerjee will inaugurate a party office in Garo Hills on November 17, according to a TMC official.
“On November 18, he will interact with church elders at Sacred Heart Shrine in Tura and hold a public meeting at the new Tura playground. He will also interact with media personnel there. Banerjee is scheduled to hold an organisational meeting with the leaders of the state,” a TMC official said.
The TMC took over as the main opposition party in the Meghalaya Assembly in November last year, after 12 of the state’s 17 Congress MLAs defected to the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
Following its landslide victory in the West Bengal assembly elections in 2021, the TMC attempted to expand its base in Goa, Haryana, Tripura, and Meghalaya.
Previously, the party ran in Goa assembly elections and Tripura civic elections.
