Kolkata, 23rd Aug: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) a “tamasha” and announced it will not send any members to the panel. The committee was formed to consider three bills that set a framework for removing the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers from office.

The bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, just before the end of the Monsoon Session. They include the Union Territory Governments (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2025.

In a statement, the TMC said it has been opposing the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill from the start. “We believe that the JPC is a sham. Therefore, we are not nominating anyone from the Trinamool,” the party stated. The bills propose a legal framework for removing the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they are continuously under arrest for 30 days on serious charges.

The opposition has strongly protested these bills. The committee has been instructed to submit its report to the House during the Winter Session, which is likely to be held in the third week of November.

Earlier, TMC leader in the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien, said the Centre was on the defensive throughout the Monsoon Session. He claimed the government took many measures to disrupt the proceedings.

In a post on ‘X’, O’Brien called the ruling alliance “weak.” He said, “Throughout the Monsoon Session, the 239-seat Modi alliance was on the defensive. The Vice President of India went missing, and the BJP has not yet found a new national president.” He added that there was also a “vote theft scam,” and the government found ways to obstruct the session under pressure.
