The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, has said that three products from the region, namely Adi Kekir ginger, handmade carpets, and Wancho wooden craft, have been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

A GI tag is a sign used to identify products that originate from a specific geographical area and possess qualities or a reputation associated with that area.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his delight and stated, “I am pleased to share that Adi Kekir (Ginger), Handmade Carpet, and Wancho Wooden Craft have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags. This is a true recognition of our state’s rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship. Let us celebrate and promote our unique traditions.”

Adi Kekir ginger is a variety of ginger grown in the East Siang, Siang, and Upper Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. It is known for its exceptional taste and size.

The handmade carpets, made by Tibetan refugees residing in different parts of the state, are renowned for their distinctive designs, motifs, and textures.

Wancho wooden craft items are unique as they feature tobacco pipes with head-shaped bowls and drinking mugs depicting warriors carrying heads. The artisans also create sculptures of Lord Buddha, animals, and dolls.

With the addition of these three products, Arunachal Pradesh now has a total of six products that have received the GI certification.

Previously, Yak Churpi (cheese made from Arunachali yak milk), Khamti rice (a sticky rice variety produced in Namsai district), and Tangsa textile (from Changlang district) were also granted the GI tag.
