Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, has accused Russia of endangering European peace and security.

“Putin’s brutal attack not only causes untold devastation in Ukraine, but it also threatens peace and security across Europe,” he says.

He also pledged to provide 1.3 billion pounds ($1.60 billion) in military support and aid to Kyiv ahead of a planned video call between Group of Seven leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion, Johnson has been one of the most vocal supporters of Ukraine’s efforts to repel Russian forces, supplying Kyiv with anti-tank missiles, air defense systems, and other weapons.
Johnson said the new pledge nearly doubles Britain’s previous spending commitments on Ukraine, calling it the highest rate of spending on a conflict since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The British government will use an emergency reserve for additional spending on Ukraine.

France had previously chastised the United Kingdom for accepting so few of the more than 5 million Ukrainians who had fled their country.

On the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany on May 9, leaders of the G7 countries will meet virtually with Zelensky on Sunday.
