New Delhi, 27th Jan. A DMK minister in Tamil Nadu poked fun at the Congress, the party’s ally, saying that the party was being governed by the latter to secure seats for itself in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, amid the division within the Opposition INDIA group.
Even though the Congress is a “big and old party,” DMK minister Raja Kannappan said that the organization has “lost its strength.”
“As far as the Congress is concerned, they run the party only to get seats. What’s the use of that? They are not party leaders because they believe that hard labor and public service are their duties. But they will appear as the elections draw nearer. At a ceremony held on Thursday in Puducherry to honor the martyrs of the linguistic movement, he declared, “This doesn’t work among the people.”
“The BJP is attempting to accomplish too much because of this. That’s not possible with us, BJP. We are not afraid. We are going to drive them out. “We’ll handle the BJP,” he declared. On Sunday in Chennai, the DMK and the Congress, partners in the Tamil Nadu government, will begin formal seat-sharing negotiations for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Speaking about the INDIA bloc, Kanappan stated, “Our leader only talked about it a day ago. The Congress is a large, established party. I do not dispute that. However, they are no longer as strong.”
MK Stalin, the leader of the DMK and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, has asked the leaders of the INDIA bloc to maintain unity despite the unrest within the Opposition alliance. It is important that the “votes against BJP should not split,” Stalin pleaded with his friends in India.
The TMC and AAP have decided to run independently in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal and Punjab, respectively, dealing a blow to the INDIA alliance earlier this week. With Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar playing guess games on switching sides from the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) to the BJP-led NDA, the alliance is facing a new crisis in Bihar.
Nitish Kumar was reportedly not happy with the way the negotiations were going, as indicated by the AAP and TMC’s respective actions, which were justified by the failure of the seat-sharing discussions.
In July of last year, a coalition of 28 opposition parties called the INDIA bloc was established with the goal of challenging the BJP-led NDA in the upcoming April–May Lok Sabha elections.
