Thane, 20th Jan. In a civil defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, a court in Thane has imposed a fine of Rs 500 on the Congress leader for the delay in submitting his written statement. The case was filed by an RSS activist who accused Gandhi of linking the Sangh with the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh.
Gandhi’s written statement was delayed by 881 days, prompting his lawyer Narayan Iyer to request an extension for the filing. Iyer argued that his client, who resides in Delhi and is an MP, travels extensively, which caused the delay.
The magistrate’s court accepted the written statement after condoning the delay but also imposed a fine of Rs 500, according to Iyer.
The RSS activist, Vivek Champanerkar, has filed the defamation case seeking damages of Rs one from the Congress leader.
The next hearing is scheduled for February 15.
