Bhopal, 25th Jan. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation has made significant progress in improving cleanliness in the city, as evidenced by its ranking in the Swachh Survekshan-2023.
Bhopal has moved up from the 6th position in 2022 to become the 5th cleanest city with a population of over 1 lakh.
It has also been awarded a 5-star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating, making it the cleanest state capital in the country.
Additionally, Bhopal ranks 5th among the cleanest million plus cities.
Bhopal’s recent success can be attributed to its adoption of best practices, innovation, and distinctiveness. The city processes its entire waste stream of 850 tons daily. The Municipal Corporation has implemented various initiatives such as scientific waste disposal, waste-to-wealth projects, recycling of construction and demolition waste, and the use of CNG-powered waste collection vehicles.
The city has also focused on the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs) approach and has improved the aesthetic appeal by removing garbage vulnerable points. Waste is now efficiently collected and processed through different plants.
To enhance waste collection and segregation, Bhopal has deployed 469 door-to-door garbage collection vehicles and 202 road sweeping waste collection vehicles. These vehicles transport waste to transfer stations equipped with green and blue capsules featuring hook loaders.
The city has also implemented a well-organized segregation system at all 12 transfer stations and currently has 6 Material Recovery Facilities (MRF). Bhopal’s commitment to sustainable urban planning is evident in the transformation of the Bhanpur dumpsite into a green area. The waste at the dumpsite has been scientifically treated, reclaiming 21 acres of land and establishing a park on 16 acres of reclaimed land. The city has shifted from traditional waste treatment and now utilizes hazardous waste as a valuable source of fuel.
Bhopal has collaborated with Hazargo Industry Pithampur to establish a preprocessing plant for managing hazardous waste. They have also established a Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBMWTF) for effective processing of medical waste.
The construction and demolition waste in Bhopal is managed at a processing plant in Thuakheda. The facility segregates waste materials and uses them to create fly ash bricks and paver blocks. Bhopal has implemented a comprehensive system for liquid waste management, including sewage treatment plants and co-treatment plants.
Treated water is reused for various purposes, and a sewage network covers 56% of the area. The city also has a scientific landfill and a leachate treatment plant.
As part of ongoing projects, NTPC has signed an agreement with BMC to set up a plant for converting dry Municipal Solid Waste to torrefied charcoal. The torrefied charcoal will be used as a by-product in NTPC’s thermal power plants.
Additionally, a Bio-CNG plant is being installed in Bhopal, which is expected to produce organic manure from wet waste. Bhopal Municipal Corporation plans to continue its efforts towards becoming a garbage-free city and aims to set benchmarks for others to follow.
