Ayodhya, 25th June. Water leaked from the roof of the sanctum sanctorum at the Ram temple following the first heavy showers since its opening to the public, Chief Priest Acharya Satyendra Das said on Monday. Alleging negligence in the temple’s construction, Acharya Das emphasized that there was no provision for draining rainwater from the premises after the downpour late Saturday night, urging immediate corrective action from temple authorities.
Upon receiving reports of the leakage, Nripendra Mishra, chairman of the temple construction committee, visited the site and directed immediate repairs to waterproof the roof, according to sources from the temple trust. Mishra separately briefed reporters on the ongoing construction progress, noting that work on the first floor is underway and slated for completion by July, with the overall temple construction expected to finish by December.
Acharya Satyendra Das expressed dismay over the incident, citing heavy leakage from the temple’s roof during Saturday night’s rain. He highlighted that rainwater seeped directly above the area where the priest performs rituals in front of Ram Lalla’s idol, as well as the VIP darshan space.
“It is surprising that despite engineers from across the country involved in the construction, the roof of a globally renowned temple is leaking,” Acharya Das remarked. “Such an oversight in the presence of prominent engineers is highly regrettable.”
Meanwhile, the heavy rains also caused severe waterlogging on Rampath road and adjoining lanes, with reports of sewer water entering residential premises. Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi assured ongoing efforts to mitigate the situation, deploying municipal teams to pump water from affected houses.
In response to the developments, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai criticized the BJP government, alleging corruption in both temple construction and civic infrastructure in Ayodhya.
“The BJP has turned Ayodhya into a hub of corruption, evidenced by the temple’s sanctum sanctorum leaking after the first rain and inadequate drainage,” Rai stated. He further accused the BJP of substandard construction practices, claiming the collapse of several sections of Rampath road, constructed at a cost of ₹624 crore, as evidence of neglect and exploitation for electoral gain.
Efforts to obtain comments from top officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) remained unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
