Faridabad, 31st Jan: Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday inaugurated the 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Crafts Mela at Faridabad in Haryana, describing the globally renowned fair as a reflection of India’s cultural soul and self-reliant spirit.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said the Surajkund Mela has, over the past four decades, evolved into a living symbol of India’s artistic excellence, civilisational continuity and cultural diversity. With participation from more than 30 countries, he noted, the Mela truly embodies India’s timeless philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
Emphasising the Atmanirbhar Bharat focus of the event, Radhakrishnan said artisans are the custodians of India’s centuries-old traditions and knowledge systems. Empowering them is vital for building an inclusive, sustainable and self-reliant economy, he said, highlighting government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana that aim to strengthen the handicrafts ecosystem through skilling, market access and financial support.
Referring to the theme states—Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya—the Vice-President said they beautifully represent India’s unity in diversity. While Uttar Pradesh showcases refined craftsmanship in textiles, metalwork and embroidery, Meghalaya’s indigenous crafts reflect sustainability, harmony with nature and community-based traditions, together reinforcing the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
The Vice-President also welcomed Egypt as the partner country for this year’s Mela, noting that its ancient civilisation and artistic traditions resonate strongly with India’s own historical journey. He said cultural diplomacy plays a vital role in strengthening people-to-people ties between nations.
During the event, Radhakrishnan appreciated the vibrant cultural performances celebrating India’s pluralistic ethos and launched the Mela Saathi mobile app to enhance visitor experience and access to information. He also commended the Surajkund Mela Authority and supporting ministries, urging visitors to support artisans directly and help carry forward India’s living heritage.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal Gurjar, senior state ministers, the Ambassador of Egypt to India, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
