New Delhi, 19th May. Sunil Jakhar, former Punjab Congress President, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party days after leaving the Congress party.

He joined the BJP in the presence of party president JP Nadda in Delhi on Thursday.

Party president Nadda welcomed Sunil Jakhar to the BJP saying, “he is an experienced political leader and I am sure he will play a big role in strengthening the party in Punjab.

Jakhar recently left Congress weeks after he was issued a show-cause notice by the top Congress leadership over his condemnation of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

He was removed from all party posts by the Congress disciplinary committee following allegations of anti-party activities by certain Punjab unit leaders against him.

Sources close to Jakhar said that he could be nominated for the Rajya Sabha and would be given some key responsibility in Punjab. Jakhar would also be instrumental in bringing more discontented Congress leaders into the Bharatiya Janata Party camp.

Sunil Jakhar had recently specified that he wanted to remain relevant in Punjab.
