Mumbai, 1st July. Senior IAS officer Sujata Saunik made history on Sunday by becoming Maharashtra’s first woman Chief Secretary in the state’s 64-year history. Saunik, an IAS officer of the 1987 batch, took over from Nitin Kareer, who retired on Sunday. She will serve in this prestigious role until her retirement in June next year.
The official handover ceremony took place at Mantralaya, the state secretariat in south Mumbai, on Monday evening, where Kareer handed over the charge to Saunik. Prior to her elevation, Saunik served as the Additional Chief Secretary in the state home department.
Sujata Saunik’s extensive career spans over three decades, with significant contributions in public policy and governance. Her expertise includes healthcare, finance, education, disaster management, and peacekeeping at district, state, and federal levels. She has also worked with international organizations, including the United Nations, as part of her service in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Saunik’s appointment is notable not only for her historic position but also because her husband, Manoj Saunik, is a former state Chief Secretary. Her leadership and experience are expected to bring significant advancements to Maharashtra’s administrative framework.
