Mumbai, 5th Feb. Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, who has opposed the reservation for Marathas under the OBC category, announced on Sunday that he had submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Bhujbal stated that he holds Shinde responsible for the allocation of portfolios. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar has not yet responded to Bhujbal’s announcement.
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis stated that Bhujbal’s resignation has not been accepted.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut dismissed Bhujbal’s disclosure as nonsense and suggested that Bhujbal and the BJP were working together.
The Mahayuti government consists of Shiv Sena, BJP, and the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). Bhujbal and eight NCP MLAs joined the Shinde government last July. Bhujbal explained that he submitted his resignation to Shinde because it is the chief minister’s prerogative to allocate ministerial portfolios.
Bhujbal’s resignation has brought attention to the delicate situation regarding the Maratha quota that the Shinde-led government is facing, especially with the restlessness among OBCs, who are considered loyal voters by the BJP. Raut took a dig at Bhujbal, pointing out that he claims to have resigned from the Cabinet last year but still attended subsequent meetings.
Bhujbal has accused the state government of allowing the Maratha community to enter the OBC quota through the backdoor by catering to Jarange’s demands.
Fadnavis stated that the chief minister will be able to provide clarification on Bhujbal’s resignation.
Raut questioned who has the authority to accept Bhujbal’s resignation, Shinde or Fadnavis.
Jarange, the Maratha quota leader, dismissed Bhujbal’s allegations of fake records being used for Maratha reservation.
