New Delhi, 11th July. India has provided 44,000 tonnes of urea to Sri Lanka to meet domestic requirements in the current and next sowing seasons, said Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday.

According to the minister, 44,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser supplied by India under the Line of Credit arrived in Colombo and were handed over to the Sri Lankan government.

“It will help to meet farming requirements in current & next cropping seasons,” Mandaviya said.

India has time and again proved to be a true friend of Sri Lankan people in their need, he said.

As the economic crisis worsened, massive street protests erupted in Sri Lanka in recent months, prompting nearly all cabinet ministers to resign.

Thousands of angry protesters stormed embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence on Saturday and set fire to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence, capping months of agitation over the ongoing economic crisis.

Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday that India has always been supportive of Sri Lanka and that it is “trying to help” the neighbouring country through its current economic crisis, while emphasising that there is “no refugee crisis right now.”

The External Affairs Ministry said, India supports the Sri Lankan people’s desire for prosperity and progress through democratic means, established institutions, and a constitutional framework.
