New Delhi, 21th Jan: Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday, underlining the deepening partnership between India and Spain.
President Murmu welcomed the Spanish Foreign Minister and reflected on the centuries-long India-Spain relations, shaped by trade, cultural exchanges, and shared democratic and pluralistic values. She noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, celebrated as the India–Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence.
Speaking on economic cooperation, the President highlighted the steadily growing trade and investment between the two nations. She said Spain’s expertise in engineering, railways, renewable energy, urban services, and defence aerospace complements India’s development priorities. She added that the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement would further bolster economic engagement.
On global issues, President Murmu emphasized India and Spain’s shared commitment to multilateralism. She called for continued collaboration on platforms such as the United Nations and the G20, to advance shared objectives of peace, prosperity, and global stability.
President Murmu also stressed the importance of joint efforts to counter terrorism, describing it as a serious threat to international peace and security. Both countries, she said, must pool their resources and expertise to combat terrorism in all forms.
Referring to India’s engagement with Europe, the President highlighted that India’s relations with the European Union are steadily strengthening. She added that India looks forward to hosting the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission as Chief Guests at the 77th Republic Day celebrations.
