New Delhi, 2nd May. Just a day after the Enforcement Directorate summoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case, there are reports that she has tested positive for COVID-19.
Congress leader Randeep Surjewala informed, “Congress president Sonia Gandhi tests positive for COVID-19. She has developed mild fever and some symptoms and has isolated herself and has been given requisite medical attention. As of today, her date of appearance before ED on June 8 stands as it is.”
After getting to know about the Congress president being Covid positive, I couldn’t resist myself from questioning, is it a coincidence or some convenience?? Well, if it is just a coincidence, we wish her a speedy recovery, so that she can appear before the ED on time.
Just a day before, the Enforcement Directorate summoned Sonia Gandhi on June 8 for questioning in the National Herald case. But, today, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala informed that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has developed some mild symptoms and has isolated herself. However, Surjewala said, “as of today, her date of appearance before ED on June 8 stands as it is.”
Notably, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were issued summons by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in the National Herald case, which was closed by the probe agency in 2015.
Even Rahul Gandhi, who was summoned on June 2 by the investigating agency, has sought more time to appear before the ED. Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Wednesday stated, “Soniaji will go for sure, but Rahulji is abroad. If he is back by then, he will appear before the agency on the scheduled date. If not, he will seek some time.”
National Herald Case
The ED’s step to summon Gandhi leaders followed the questioning of senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Treasurer Pawan Bansal in April, 2022 in Delhi in connection with its money laundering investigation into the National Herald case.
The probe agency then recorded the statements of Congress leaders Kharge and Bansal under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The National Herald is published by Associated Journals Limited and owned by Young Indian Pvt Limited.
While Mallikarjun Kharge is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of YIL, Pawan Bansal is the Managing Director (MD) of AJL.
The Enforcement Directorate is presently investigating the shareholding pattern and financial transactions as well as the role of party functionaries in the functioning of Associated Journals Limited and Young Indian Pvt Limited.
The Young Indian Pvt Limited promoters include Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subramanian Swamy had charged that the Gandhis cheated and misappropriated funds, with Young Indian Pvt Limited paying only Rs 50 lakh to obtain the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that Associated Journals Limited owed to the Congress.
Swamy had filed a complaint with a Delhi court earlier.
Following the court taking cognizance of an Income Tax Department investigation against Young Indian Pvt Limited on Subramanian Swamy’s petition, the ED also filed a fresh case under PMLA.
