New Delhi, 11th Nov. A special song promoting the benefits of millets, on which Prime Minister Narendra Modi collaborated with Indian-American singer Falu, has been nominated for a Grammy award in the best global music performance category. The song, titled “Abundance in Millets,” is performed by Mumbai-born singer-songwriter Falguni Shah, also known as Falu, and her husband Gaurav Shah.
Alongside Falu and Gaurav Shah’s “Abundance in Millets,” other nominees in the best global music performance category include Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, and Shahzad Ismaily for “Shadow Forces,” Burna Boy for “Alone,” Davido for “Feel,” Silvana Estrada for “Milagro Y Disastre,” Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain featuring Rakesh Chaurasia for “Pashto,” Ibrahim Maalouf featuring Cimafunk, and Tank and the Bangas for “Todo Colores.”
The year 2023 has been designated as the International Year of Millets, following a proposal by India and endorsement from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) governing bodies and the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Falu had previously mentioned that Prime Minister Modi collaborated with her and her husband Gaurav Shah to write the song. The track, “Abundance in Millets,” featuring Modi, was released in June to celebrate the International Year of Millets. The purpose of the song is to raise awareness about millets as a potential solution to world hunger.
Falu, who won the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album in 2022 for her album “A Colorful World,” revealed that the idea for the song came to her after meeting Modi in New Delhi last year. During their discussion on the power of music to bring about change and uplift humanity, Modi suggested that she write a song with a message on ending hunger. Falu then asked the prime minister if he would write the song with her, and he agreed.
