New Delhi, 4th Aug: A dramatic family feud over control of the ₹30,000 crore Sona Group has escalated into a public battle, with Rani Kapur, the mother of the late Chairman Sunjay Kapur, sending a letter to British authorities alleging her son’s death was the result of a “transnational conspiracy” and possibly “murder.”

In the letter, Kapur claims to have “credible and concerning evidence” of “foul play, including the possibility of murder, abetment, conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.” She further suggests a “collusion between individuals who stood to gain financially” from her son’s death, an apparent reference to his second wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur.

The company has swiftly and strongly refuted the allegations. Sona Comstar issued a market filing stating that Rani Kapur is not a shareholder, majority or otherwise, and has had no official role in the company since 2019. The company also sent a cease-and-desist letter to Ms. Kapur, accusing her of spreading “unlawful and defamatory information” and demanding she withdraw her claims within 24 hours. The notice warns of potential civil or criminal action if she fails to comply.

Sunjay Kapur, 53, passed away in London on June 12 after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing polo. While the official cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest, there were reports he suffered an anaphylactic shock after a bee flew into his mouth. The UK police have not publicly announced any formal criminal investigation into his death.

The battle began with Rani Kapur’s email to the company board, in which she claimed she had been “compelled to sign documents” under coercion while grieving and questioned the appointment of certain people, including Priya Sachdev Kapur, to the board. Priya Sachdev Kapur has not commented publicly on the allegations.

Last month, Rani Kapur, in her first public statement since her son’s death, had told news agency ANI that she still needed “closure” and that her legal team would be handling all future matters.
