“Some Parties Treat Infiltrators as Vote Bank”: Amit Shah

New Delhi, 12th Oct: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday claimed that infiltration from across borders was contributing to the growth of the Muslim population in India and accused certain political parties of treating infiltrators as a vote bank.

Delivering a lecture in memory of Dainik Jagran’s former editor-in-chief Narendra Mohan on “Infiltration, Demographic Change and Democracy,” Shah said infiltration was a national, not political, issue and posed a threat to democracy. He questioned why infiltration occurs in some regions but not along the Gujarat and Rajasthan borders.

Shah asserted that the Centre alone cannot prevent infiltration, highlighting that some state governments provide shelter to infiltrators due to political considerations. “When a person does not understand the difference between a refugee and an infiltrator, they are deceiving their own soul,” he said.

He cited Assam, where the decadal growth rate of the Muslim population in 2011 was 29.6%, and districts in West Bengal where it reached up to 70%, calling this “clear evidence that infiltration has occurred in the past.”

The minister also noted a decline in the population of tribal communities in Jharkhand, which he attributed to infiltration from Bangladesh. Shah warned that giving shelter to infiltrators for political gains undermines national security.
