Mumbai, 29th Dec: Silver has surged to become one of the world’s most valuable assets, overtaking technology giants Apple Inc and Alphabet to climb the global rankings, and is now closing in on NVIDIA Corporation for the second spot after gold.

According to data from companiesmarketcap.com, silver’s market capitalisation has risen to $4.220 trillion, placing it just 8.1 per cent behind NVIDIA, which currently stands at $4.592 trillion. Gold continues to dominate global asset rankings with a market cap of $31.598 trillion as of December 26.

The sharp rise comes amid a historic rally in silver prices. On Friday, spot silver on Comex crossed the $75 per ounce mark and extended gains to hit a fresh record high. In India, silver futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) touched an all-time high of Rs 2,33,115 per kilogram during intraday trade.

Market participants believe silver’s rally could push it even higher in global rankings. Surendra Mehta, national secretary of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), said that if current momentum continues, silver could soon overtake NVIDIA to become the world’s second-most valuable asset.

Mehta also highlighted unusual price distortions in global markets, noting that the price gap between Comex and the Shanghai exchange has widened to nearly $7, significantly higher than the typical gap of less than $1.

In Indian markets, silver prices have jumped over 153 per cent in the past year, rising from Rs 91,600 on December 26, 2024, to Rs 2,31,879 on December 26, 2025. Gold has also posted strong gains, but has lagged behind silver, rising nearly 80 per cent during the same period, from Rs 77,460 to Rs 1,39,233 per 10 grams of 24-carat gold.
