Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit as India’s ODI Skipper

Mumbai, 4th Oct: Young batter Shubman Gill was on Saturday appointed as India’s ODI captain ahead of the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, which begins on October 19. Gill takes over the reins from Rohit Sharma, in what is seen as a gradual leadership transition ahead of the 2026 ODI World Cup to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced Shreyas Iyer as the team’s new vice-captain. Iyer, who recently opted to take a break from red-ball cricket, has been rewarded with a leadership role in the 50-over format.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar underlined that the move was aimed at long-term planning. “This is about preparing the team for the future. Gill represents the new generation of Indian cricket, and this leadership transition is crucial ahead of the World Cup,” he said.

Before this announcement, India had three different captains for three formats — Rohit Sharma in ODIs, Gill in Tests, and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is. With Gill now leading both Tests and ODIs, and serving as Suryakumar’s deputy in T20Is, the 25-year-old is being increasingly seen as India’s all-format leader-in-waiting.
