New Delhi, 11th June: Chilling new details have emerged in the brutal murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed just days into his honeymoon in Meghalaya. Police sources reveal his newlywed wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was deeply in love with another man, Raj Kushwaha, and had even warned her family of “consequences” if she was forced to marry Raja.
Raja’s elder brother, Vipin, told police that Sonam had informed her mother about her affair with Raj, an employee at her family’s business. However, her mother strongly opposed the relationship.
“Sonam told her mother she didn’t want to marry Raja. Her mother, however, objected to the relationship with Raj and persuaded her to marry within their community,” a police source stated.
The source added a grim detail from Vipin’s statement: “Vipin alleged that Sonam agreed to compromise and marry Raja but warned of consequences. She said ‘you will see what I do to that person. You all will have to bear the consequences.’ No one thought she would kill Raja.”
From Missing Couple to Murder Plot
These disturbing details surfaced as Raja’s murder by Sonam, Raj, and three accomplices has shocked the country. The crime happened while Sonam and Raja were on their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
The case initially began as a “missing couple” report after Raja and Sonam couldn’t be found in the northeastern state. It quickly turned tragic, revealing a shocking betrayal. Raj Kushwaha was later identified as the main conspirator.
Vipin further alleged that after the murder, Sonam stayed in a hotel room with Raj. Raj then reportedly sent her to her hometown in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where she stayed for two days.
Twenty-four-year-old Sonam and 29-year-old Raja, both from Indore, married on May 11. Police confirmed the wedding took place despite Sonam’s ongoing relationship with Raj, an accountant at her family’s furniture sheet business, which Sonam managed.
After their wedding, Raja and Sonam traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They vanished on May 23, hours after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Raja’s body was found on June 2, about 20 km from Nongriat. Police stated that Raja was killed by Sonam, who went “missing” after the murder. She had allegedly hired killers to get rid of her husband, wanting to be with her lover.
Surrender and Arrests
On Sunday night, Sonam reappeared in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, surrendering at Nandganj police station. Her surrender came just hours after three accomplices—Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kurmi—were arrested from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh (Indore and Sagar). Raj, the alleged mastermind, was arrested later.
Police sources suggest Sonam offered ₹20 lakh to the accused to commit the crime, though an official confirmation is still pending. Earlier sources indicated the hitmen met the newlyweds in Bengaluru, from where they took a connecting flight to the northeast.
