Mumbai, 9th July: In a shocking display of aggression, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad from Buldhana, Maharashtra, was caught on camera physically assaulting a canteen staff member at the MLA canteen in Mumbai over the alleged poor quality of food. The video, which has gone viral, shows the legislator kicking and punching the staff, drawing widespread condemnation.
The incident occurred after the MLA was reportedly served dal, rice, and chapatis. Gaikwad claimed the dal was “rotten” and caused him to feel unwell after eating just a few morsels. He immediately confronted the canteen staff, demanding they smell the food and acknowledge its poor quality.
“I started eating and threw up after a few bites. I felt unwell. I didn’t even change. I went straight to the canteen and told them the food was terrible. The manager himself admitted it wasn’t fit to eat,” Gaikwad stated while defending his actions.
The MLA alleged that food quality at the canteen has been substandard for years, with complaints often ignored. “They’re playing with the health of thousands. Their chicken and egg stocks are days old. I’ve raised the issue multiple times,” he added.
When questioned about whether such violent conduct was appropriate for an elected representative, Gaikwad remained unapologetic.
“I am an MLA and a warrior too. When people don’t listen after repeated complaints, I speak in the language Balasaheb Thackeray taught us. I complained four times. Meri satak gayi (I lost it). I am trained in judo, gymnastics, karate, and even sword fighting. I have no regrets,” he said.
He further justified his actions by stating that administrative inaction leaves the public with no choice but to take matters into their own hands. “Should I accept being served rotten food today and food with insects tomorrow? I’m not a Gandhian. I did what was necessary, and I’ll raise this issue in the Assembly,” he declared.
The incident has once again brought into focus the abuse of power by public representatives and the growing culture of impunity among politicians. Public outrage is mounting, with calls for disciplinary action against the MLA. So far, there has been no official response from Shiv Sena leadership regarding the incident.
