Patna, 28th Jan. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took a dig at JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar for his recent change of stance after leaving the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar. Tharoor referred to Kumar as a “snollygoster,” meaning a cunning and unprincipled politician.
Tharoor shared a social media post from 2017 when Kumar had previously left the Mahagathbandhan alliance in Bihar with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress to join the BJP, despite their historical rivalry.
Tharoor had tweeted the definition of “snollygoster” in 2017, stating that it means a shrewd and unprincipled politician. He tagged that post and commented on Kumar’s recent actions, saying, “Didn’t realize it would be the Word of Another Day too! #snollygoster.”
Tharoor, known for his extensive vocabulary, has used the term “snollygoster” before. In 2017, he used it to refer to Kumar’s switch to the BJP. He used it again in 2019 when Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP became the chief minister of Maharashtra with the support of Ajit Pawar from the Nationalist Congress Party.
In November 2022, Tharoor criticized politicians who frequently change parties by posting a video of a chameleon changing colors as it climbs a pole. He also used the term “snollygoster” in that context.
The Congress party compared Nitish Kumar to a chameleon and stated that the people of Bihar will never forgive him for his betrayal. This was in response to Kumar’s resignation as Bihar chief minister and his departure from the Mahagathbandhan alliance, which has weakened the opposition bloc in India.
