The decision was taken after consultations among key opposition leaders, with the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) extending their support to Pawar’s candidature.
Announcing the development, NCP leader Supriya Sule said discussions were held with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray regarding the nomination.
“Yesterday Jayant Patil and I met Uddhav Thackeray and discussed it. NCP (SP) wants to thank the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) for extending their support to Sharad Pawar,” Sule said.
Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal, who addressed the press conference alongside Sule, said the party had also held consultations with senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge before backing Pawar.
“We had discussions with Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress had decided to support Sharad Pawar for Rajya Sabha,” Sapkal said.
