Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth in Uttarakhand, was stopped by the police on Monday from performing the circumambulation of the Gyanvapi area in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Assistant Police Commissioner Awadhesh Pandey stated that the seer did not have permission for the parikrama.

The police officer mentioned that there are prohibitory orders in place under CrPC Section 144 in the area, as the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi mosque dispute is still pending in court.

As soon as the Shankaracharya announced his plan to conduct the parikrama at 3 pm, the police took action and stopped him as he left a mutt.

The seer expressed, “It is our tradition to circumambulate the original area of Gyanvapi… But we are being stopped from going there. We are being informed that Section 144 has been imposed there. We are currently in the process of obtaining permission for the parikrama.”
