New Delhi, 19th Dec. During an opposition protest in parliament, a Trinamool MP imitated Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, which caused laughter among other members, including Rahul Gandhi, who recorded the incident on their mobile phones.
What started as a moment of comic relief on a day when 49 MPs were suspended turned into a major controversy. Vice President Dhankhar, who chairs the Rajya Sabha, condemned the parody as shameful and unacceptable.
In a video, Kalyan Banerjee, a suspended Trinamool Congress member, can be seen speaking and gesturing animatedly as he mimicked the Vice President on the steps outside the new Parliament building. The impromptu skit amused the MPs, and Rahul Gandhi was seen recording it on his phone.
In the video, Kalyan Banerjee can be heard saying, “My spine is so straight, I’m so tall,” while depicting his version of the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha during a mock parliament by protesting MPs. Jagdeep Dhankhar called the incident ridiculous and unacceptable.

When the House reconvened at noon after adjournment, Mr. Dhankhar, referring to Rahul Gandhi, said, “The Office of Chairman, Rajya Sabha, and the Office of Speaker are very different. Political parties will have their differences and exchanges, but imagine a senior leader of your party recording another member of another party.”
“Mimicking the Chairman, mimicking the Speaker. How ridiculous, how shameful, how unacceptable,” he added.
The BJP, sharing the video, criticized both Banerjee and Gandhi for mocking the vice president.
The party said, “If the country was wondering why opposition MPs were suspended, here is the reason. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mocked the Honourable Vice President, while Rahul Gandhi enthusiastically cheered him on. One can imagine how reckless and disrespectful they have been towards the House!”

The opposition MPs have been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach. Mr. Dhankhar had previously described the MPs’ actions as a clear violation of the rules.
The Delhi police revealed that the parliament security breach was well-coordinated and carefully planned over several months by a group of six individuals. The motive behind the unprecedented smoke protest, according to investigators, was to draw attention to the growing unemployment, the plight of farmers, and the situation in Manipur.
The group wanted these issues to be discussed in parliament and believed that a flashy demonstration would attract attention. The group was associated with a Facebook page called “Fans of Bhagat Singh.”
Parliament has implemented stricter security protocols following the breach, including a temporary ban on visitors and restrictions on non-essential personnel, including the media.
In his first comments on the security breach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in an interview with Dainik Jagran newspaper that the incident was very serious. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation rather than engaging in debates.
