New Delhi, 25th Aug: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday dismissed growing speculation surrounding the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, stating that the resignation was solely for health reasons. In an interview, Shah also rejected claims from the opposition that Dhankhar was under “house arrest.”

“Dhankhar sahab’s resignation letter is clear in itself. He has cited health reasons for his resignation,” Shah said. He added that the former Vice President “held a constitutional post and discharged his duties as per the constitution. He resigned due to personal health reasons. One should not deliberate much on the issue.”

The Home Minister’s remarks follow a wave of questions from opposition leaders who had speculated that Dhankhar was “silenced” by the government. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, questioned Dhankhar’s whereabouts and criticized the government’s actions. Senior Supreme Court advocate Kapil Sibal also raised the possibility of a habeas corpus petition being filed, given Mr. Dhankhar’s absence from public view.

Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 21. At the time, he submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, stating that he wanted “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” The BJP has consistently maintained that the resignation was voluntary and due to health issues, dismissing any suggestions of political differences.
