New Delhi, 1st Dec: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed Vice President CP Radhakrishnan as he presided over the Rajya Sabha for the first time, calling it a moment of pride for all Members of the Upper House. Extending his greetings, the Prime Minister assured that the House would uphold the dignity of the institution under the Chairman’s stewardship.

Modi said the Winter Session, set to deliberate on key national matters, would benefit significantly from Radhakrishnan’s leadership and long public experience.

He emphasised that Radhakrishnan, who comes from a humble farming family, has dedicated his life to public service. “Social service has been his constant identity. Politics was only one aspect; the spirit of service remained at the core,” the Prime Minister said, describing seva, samarpan and sanyam as the defining qualities of the new Chairman.

The Prime Minister highlighted Radhakrishnan’s transformative work at the Coir Board and his administrative roles as Governor and Lieutenant Governor in Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana and Puducherry. Modi particularly noted his outreach to tribal communities in Jharkhand, including visits to remote villages and overnight stays in small settlements to understand people’s needs.

Reflecting on personal memories, Modi shared how Radhakrishnan had survived life-threatening incidents—including nearly drowning as a child at the Avinashi temple pond and narrowly escaping the Coimbatore bomb blast that killed dozens. These experiences, he said, only deepened his resolve to serve society.

Modi also recounted how Radhakrishnan took a personal vow to give up non-vegetarian food during a visit to Kashi, moved by spiritual inspiration rather than any judgment on others’ choices.

The Prime Minister praised his commitment during the Emergency, noting that he stood up for democracy despite limited resources. “Your struggle and public awareness efforts continue to inspire all who value democratic ideals,” Modi said.

Radhakrishnan’s organisational skills, openness to fresh ideas and commitment to promoting young leadership were also acknowledged. Modi recalled how he consistently highlighted Coimbatore’s development needs during his tenure as MP.

Expressing confidence in his new role, the Prime Minister said Radhakrishnan’s vast experience—as parliamentarian, administrator and now Vice President—will guide the House and strengthen national leadership.
