Mumbai: Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened in the red on Thursday, snapping a seven-day winning streak amid mixed global cues and cautious investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex slipped 58.06 points to open at 80,058.43, while the NSE Nifty fell 51.05 points to begin trading at 24,277.90.
In the previous session, the Sensex closed at 80,116.49 and the Nifty 50 ended at 24,328.95, marking record highs. However, today’s subdued start reflects consolidation after a strong rally.
Midcap, Smallcap Indices in Green
Despite the dip in benchmark indices, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices opened in the green, indicating resilience in broader market participation.
Top Gainers and Losers on Sensex
From the Sensex pack, Bajaj Finance surged 5.99%, leading the gainers along with Bajaj Finserv, Tata Motors, State Bank of India, and Tech Mahindra.
On the flip side, Eternal (formerly Zomato) declined by 1.36%, while Infosys, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, and HCL Tech also traded in the red.
At the time of reporting, 1,092 stocks in the Nifty pack were trading positively, 767 stocks were in the red, and 145 stocks remained unchanged.
Gift Nifty Signals Weak Start
Earlier in the day, Gift Nifty—a key pre-market indicator for Nifty 50—hinted at a weak opening, starting lower at 24,280 against the previous close of 24,317.50.
Mixed Global Cues Impact Markets
Global market cues remained mixed. While US markets rallied, supported by a softer tone from President Donald Trump regarding the Federal Reserve and trade policies, Asian markets lacked uniform direction.
- Nikkei 225 (Japan) was up 0.84% at 35,156.56
- Kospi (South Korea) fell 0.48%
- Hang Seng (Hong Kong) dropped 1.35%
- Shanghai Composite (China) also traded in the red
Sectoral Snapshot: Nifty Indices Trade Mixed
Among the Nifty sectoral indices:
- Nifty IT fell 0.01%
- Nifty Metal dropped 0.13%
- Nifty Pharma rose 0.31%
- Nifty Auto gained 0.20%
The market is likely to remain range-bound through the session as investors weigh global economic indicators and await further domestic earnings announcements.
