New Delhi, 10th Dec: Union Minister of Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Wednesday outlined sweeping expansion and modernisation efforts within India Post during the Winter Session of the Lok Sabha, highlighting the transformative growth of the world’s largest postal network.
Scindia informed the House that India Post now operates 1.64 lakh post offices, supported by 2.78 lakh Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). Praising their dedication, he said GDS workers “toil day and night not only to do business, but to convey emotion from one human being to another.”
He said the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has prioritised strengthening India Post over the past 11 years. Key achievements include:
- 4,903 new post offices constructed in Left Wing Extremism–affected states in the last 3.5 years
- 5,746 post offices sanctioned for unbanked villages, of which 5,657 (97%) are already operational
- 10,170 post offices added nationwide since 2014
- ₹405 crore invested in constructing and renovating postal buildings, including 49 heritage post offices described as “institutional jewels”
Despite these advances, Scindia noted that 25,000 more post offices owned by India Post still require renovation and will need additional funding.
Looking ahead, the Minister announced a comprehensive Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) initiative aimed at modernising India Post’s first-mile, middle-mile and last-mile delivery systems. The effort will make operations faster, more service-oriented and digitally enabled for millions of citizens.
Scindia said India Post is introducing automation and studying global best practices to evolve into one of the world’s top logistics carriers.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening service delivery and transforming India Post into a modern, technology-driven logistics powerhouse for the nation.
