Dubai, 9th Sept: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday launched the UPI–UPU Integration project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai, hailing it as a landmark initiative to transform cross-border remittances for millions worldwide.

The project, developed by the Department of Posts (DoP), NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), links India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the UPU Interconnection Platform, combining the reliability of postal networks with the speed and affordability of UPI.

Calling it “more than a technology launch, but a social compact,” Scindia said the move would enable families across borders to send money faster, safer and at much lower cost. “It reaffirms that public infrastructure built for citizens can be linked across borders to serve humanity better,” he added.

Outlining India’s vision for a modern and inclusive postal sector, Scindia defined four goals — to connect through seamless logistics, to include by offering affordable digital financial services, to modernise with AI and DigiPIN, and to cooperate through South–South partnerships supported by a UPU technical cell.

Underlining India Post’s contribution to Digital India and Viksit Bharat, Scindia highlighted that over 560 million accounts have been opened through Aadhaar, Jan Dhan and India Post Payments Bank, most in women’s names, while the postal network delivered over 900 million letters and parcels last year.

In a major announcement, Scindia committed USD 10 million during this cycle to boost innovation in e-commerce and digital payments. He also declared India’s candidature for the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council of the UPU, underscoring New Delhi’s resolve to strengthen global postal cooperation.

“India comes to you not with proposals, but with partnership,” Scindia concluded. “We believe in resilience, interoperable solutions, and in trust — linking payments, identity, addressing and logistics so that global commerce becomes seamless.”
