New Delhi, 28th Oct: Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has stressed the need to develop world-class tourist circuits in the North Eastern Region (NER) to transform it into a premier destination for both domestic and international travellers.
Scindia made the remarks while participating in three High-Level Task Force (HLTF) meetings held on October 27, 2025, focusing on the North East Economic Corridor, Tourism, and Agriculture & Horticulture. These task forces were constituted following the consensus reached during the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in December 2024, aimed at enhancing regional collaboration and ensuring integrated development.
At the meeting on the North East Economic Corridor, chaired by Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma, discussions centred on road, rail, air, and digital connectivity, inland waterways, energy, trade corridors, and border infrastructure. The Union Minister appreciated the in-depth roadmap presented and urged Mizoram to submit a final report after incorporating feedback from member states including Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur.
During the HLTF on Tourism, chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and attended by Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Scindia underscored the importance of a bottom-up approach to developing tourism action plans. He proposed the creation of world-class tourist circuits, encouraging collaboration with neighbouring countries to attract global visitors.
Shekhawat, in his remarks, highlighted the ongoing tourism infrastructure and promotional activities undertaken by the Ministry of Tourism, noting that tourism remains a key driver of the North East’s economic growth.
In the HLTF on Agriculture and Horticulture, chaired by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, the focus was on enhancing value addition, processing, and marketing of agricultural produce. Discussions covered integrated cold chain development, organic farming promotion, and cluster-based cultivation. Scindia emphasized the need for economic value addition and sustainable strategies to strengthen agri-based enterprises in the region.
The Union Minister reiterated that the High-Level Task Forces represent a collaborative framework to ensure that the North East’s growth is regionally balanced and strategically coordinated, fostering a unified vision for the future.
