New Delhi, 2nd Dec. The Supreme Court on Monday directed Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border, to convince fellow protesters not to obstruct highways and cause inconvenience to the public. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan disposed of a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Dallewal, who was removed from the protest site on November 26 and taken to a hospital in Ludhiana.
While acknowledging that Dallewal had been released and had persuaded another protestor to end their fast-unto-death on Saturday, the bench emphasized the importance of conducting protests peacefully. “In a democratic setup, you can engage in peaceful protests, but do not cause inconvenience to people,” said the court. The Khanauri border is a critical route for Punjab, the bench noted.
Dallewal, who resumed his fast after his release, is leading protests for the acceptance of farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee for MSP and compensation for farmers who died during a previous agitation. Farmers have been stationed at various border points between Punjab and Haryana since February, calling for urgent government action on their issues.
