New Delhi, 4th Jan. The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a plea by Congress leader Pawan Khera, who was seeking to have criminal proceedings against him dropped. Khera is accused of making objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Allahabad High Court had previously dismissed his plea, and the Supreme Court has now upheld that decision.
The bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta stated that they were not inclined to interfere with the high court’s ruling.
“Sorry, we are not inclined,” the bench said.
Last year, on August 17, the high court had dismissed Khera’s plea, stating that the evidence collected by the investigating officer could not be evaluated in a petition filed under section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) for quashing the case.
In March of the same year, the Supreme Court had combined three FIRs filed against Pawan Khera in Assam and Uttar Pradesh for his alleged objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Modi. The case was transferred to the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow, and Khera was granted interim bail.
Khera has since offered an unconditional apology in court for his alleged remarks.
