The Supreme Court on Thursday granted a six-month extension to the interim bail of former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik in a money laundering case.

The bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal extended Malik’s medical bail after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) expressed no objection.

This comes after the top court had previously extended Malik’s interim bail by three months on October 12 last year. Malik had appealed to the top court after the Bombay High Court denied him bail on medical grounds in the case being investigated by the ED.

The top court had acknowledged Malik’s kidney ailment and the lack of improvement in his condition since he was granted interim bail in August 2021.

Malik was arrested by the ED in February 2022 in connection with a case related to fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates. He had sought relief from the high court, citing his chronic kidney disease and other ailments, and also requested bail on merit. The high court had agreed to hear his plea for bail on merit after two weeks.

The ED’s case against Malik is based on an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Dawood Ibrahim and his associates under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, as Dawood Ibrahim is a designated global terrorist and a key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts.
