New Delhi, 11th Nov. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail plea of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who faces multiple accusations of rape and sexual assault. A bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma observed that Revanna, described as “very influential,” could potentially interfere with the investigation if released.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Revanna, argued that the chargesheet filed did not include Section 376 (rape) of the IPC. However, the bench upheld the Karnataka High Court’s October 21 decision denying bail and dismissed Revanna’s plea, though granting him the option to approach the court again after six months.
Revanna, son of JD(S) MLA H D Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has been in judicial custody at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Jail since his arrest in May. He faces multiple charges in four sexual assault and harassment cases, following the release of pen drives allegedly containing incriminating videos that circulated in Hassan ahead of the April 26 Lok Sabha polls.
Revanna left for Germany the day after the Lok Sabha polls, but the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the allegations arrested him upon his return to Bengaluru on May 31. The JD(S) subsequently suspended him from the party, and Interpol issued a “blue corner notice” on the SIT’s request for information on his movements.
The case has seen significant developments, with a 2,144-page chargesheet submitted in August by the SIT. The probe has intensified following reports of video evidence, with Revanna’s arrest highlighting growing public concern over allegations of abuse involving high-profile individuals.
