New Delhi, 6th Oct. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud stated on Friday that the Supreme Court has appointed a sign-language interpreter to assist hearing-impaired lawyers and litigants in understanding judicial proceedings.
“Today, we have an interpreter whom the Supreme Court has appointed,” the CJI said at the start of the proceedings.
“This is a historic moment,” a lawyer said.
The Chief Justice stated that he wanted a sign-language interpreter for the Constitution bench proceedings.
On September 22, a bench led by the Chief Justice of India heard hearing-impaired lawyer Sarah Sunny via sign-language interpreter Saurav Roy Chowdhury in a case involving the rights of people with disabilities (PwD).
Lawyers and bar associations applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to allow a hearing-impaired lawyer to argue a case with a sign-language interpreter.
CJI Chandrachud, who is sensitive to giving differently-abled people with access to justice delivery systems, also set up a Supreme Court committee on accessibility last year with the goal of ensuring accessibility and comprehending the challenges faced by specially-abled people.
Several infrastructure upgrades have been made on the top court grounds to improve accessibility for specially-abled persons.
