New Delhi, 15th Oct: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the limited bursting of green firecrackers in Delhi between October 18 and 21, while highlighting that smuggled firecrackers from outside the NCR region cause more environmental harm.

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai observed, “Since firecrackers are smuggled in, they cause more damage than green firecrackers. We have to take a balanced approach, permitting it in moderation while not compromising with the environment.”

Green crackers, which emit lower pollution due to reduced use of raw materials and dust suppressants, will be allowed only during 6 am to 7 am and 8 pm to 10 pm. The court clarified that no firecrackers from outside the Delhi NCR region will be permitted.

The pollution control bodies will monitor the Air Quality Index and submit a report during the period.

The bench also stated that manufacturers of fake green crackers will have their licences cancelled. The measure has been termed “temporary,” balancing environmental concerns with festival celebrations.
