New Delhi, 21st Aug: In a major shake-up, Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh has been removed from his post just 21 days after his appointment. He has been replaced by Satish Golcha, Director General of Tihar Jail, who has now been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.
Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer, was earlier considered a frontrunner for the top job. Known for his unwavering integrity and strict administrative style, he has previously served as DGP of Arunachal Pradesh, and in key roles within the Delhi Police including DCP, Joint CP, and Special CP.
During the 2019 Delhi riots, he was Special CP (Intelligence) and handled law and order in Northeast Delhi. His long policing experience, particularly in Delhi, is cited as a major factor in his appointment.
Before being named Commissioner, Golcha was serving as DG (Prisons) in Tihar Jail, a post he took over after the retirement of IPS officer Sanjay Beniwal last year.
SBK Singh’s brief tenure
SBK Singh, a 1998-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, had taken charge as Delhi Police Commissioner on August 1, 2025, succeeding Sanjay Arora. His removal comes in the backdrop of a recent security lapse involving Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, sources said.
Singh, however, has had a distinguished career spanning 36 years in Delhi Police and other assignments. He had also led the security team during the visit of former US President Barack Obama to India. Singh has earlier headed police forces in Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, apart from holding several critical posts in the national capital.
Golcha’s reputation
Satish Golcha is widely regarded as a tough administrator with strong law-and-order credentials. His appointment is expected to bring a renewed focus on discipline, intelligence, and security preparedness in Delhi.
