Bettiah, 16th Feb. In a significant moment for Bihar’s transportation infrastructure, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), unveiled the Kalughat IWT Terminal and two community jetties in Bettiah, Bihar.
This inauguration, attended by dignitaries including Vijay Kumar Sinha, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, and Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Member of Parliament, signifies a significant leap forward in the region’s connectivity and trade networks.
Located strategically on the north bank of the River Ganga in Bihar’s Saran District, the Kalughat Terminal emerges as a vital hub facilitating cargo movement, particularly for Nepal-bound shipments via Raxaul and the hinterland of North Bihar. With infrastructure worth Rs. 82.48 Crore, including a 125m x 30m berth capable of handling 77,000 TEUs annually, the terminal promises to enhance trade and connectivity in the region.
During the inauguration, Sonowal emphasized the transformative impact of multimodal terminals on regional trade and economic prosperity. He highlighted the government’s commitment to leveraging inland waterways for inclusive growth, citing the development of four such terminals in the last decade.
In addition to the terminal, floating pontoon jetties at Mangalpur and Bettiah on the River Gandak have been established with an investment of Rs. 3.33 crore. These jetties will bolster market access for producers and foster economic exchange between Nepal and India via NW-37.
The projects underscore the government’s efforts to develop inland water transport as a viable mode of transport, aimed at reducing logistics costs and promoting economic development.
