Sangeet Natak Akademi Announces Eminent Artists as Fellows and Awardees

The General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, convened in New Delhi on February 21 and 22, 2024.

Unanimously, the council elected six distinguished personalities in the realm of performing arts as Akademi Fellows, also known as Akademi Ratna. This Fellowship, restricted to 40 recipients at any given time, is recognized as one of the most prestigious and rare honors in the field.

Furthermore, the General Council meticulously selected ninety-two artists from various disciplines such as Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre, Puppetry, and Overall contribution/scholarship in Performing Arts for the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, also known as Akademi Puraskar, for the years 2022 & 2023.

The chosen Fellows and Awardees represent the rich cultural tapestry of our nation, hailing from diverse States and Union Territories. Their expertise spans across an array of performing arts forms, including music, dance, drama, folk & tribal art, puppetry, and allied theatre art forms, underscoring the vibrant heritage of India’s artistic traditions.

Additionally, the Akademi announced the selection of 80 young artists for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for the years 2022 and 2023.

This esteemed award, named after the legendary Ustad Bismillah Khan, carries a purse of Rs. 25,000/- (Rupees Twenty-Five Thousand Only), along with a Tamrapatra and Angavastram, recognizing the exceptional talent and promise exhibited by these emerging artists.

Since its inception in 1952, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards have served as a beacon of excellence, honoring individuals for their outstanding contributions and sustained dedication to the performing arts.

The Akademi Fellowships, adorned with a purse money of Rs. 3,00,000/- (Rupees Three Lakhs), and the Akademi Awards, with a purse money of Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lakh), in addition to a Tamrapatra and Angavastram, signify the pinnacle of achievement and recognition in the field.

These esteemed honors will be conferred by the Hon’ble President of India in a special investiture ceremony, further cementing the legacy of India’s rich cultural heritage and celebrating the invaluable contributions of our nation’s finest artists.
